Darkening of the genital area can cause social and psychological problems, especially insecurity in sexual intercourse.
Vaginal whitening, also referred to as vulvar bleaching, is one of the applications that has been growing rapidly in recent years. The most common causes of darkening of the vulva; laser hair removal, waxing, use of birth control pills, PCOS, exposure to ultraviolet rays, solarium, and smoking. Some systemic diseases and drugs also increase color darkening.
Laser procedures are most commonly used in vulva bleaching.
In the usage of vaginal laser, CO2 laser and Er:YAG laser are frequently used. The skin color type of the person is important in laser procedures. The applied energy is kept at a lower level to protect against negative effects in people with dark skin.
A few days after laser skin lightening, the skin’s color darkens, and then peeling starts by itself. From below, a vibrant, pink texture appears.
Complaints such as burning, itching and needling for a few weeks after vaginal laser are normal.
A single session might be sufficient in some cases. If necessary, a total of 2-4 more sessions can be performed every 1-2 months. There is no prohibition of sexual intercourse. The next day, a shower with warm water can be taken. Rubbing the genital area should be avoided.
After vaginal whitening, sun exposure should be avoided for one month.
High laser energy during the whitening procedure can result in complications such as burns, score formation, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and permanent hypopigmentation.
